The People vs. George Lucas

I remember watching the original Star Wars as a young girl and I had no idea what was going on. I was too young to understand the story lines that went on for three films but I knew I was watching something magical. I was in the sixth grade when Star Wars: Episode I came out in theaters. I was excited because I knew that this film was going to be historic and I would get to be a part of the experience. I waited in line for three hours, was shoved in a jam packed theater, and sat patiently for the film to begin. I could barely contain myself when the lights dimmed. However, halfway in the movie I was no longer antsy with anticipation and excitement. I was actually bored and annoyed. The graphics, visual effects, and action sequences were beyond what I’ve ever seen before but the story and the characters were flailing around without purpose. I wasn’t outraged like other Star Wars fan but I did understand, somewhat, the gut-wrenching pain that Star War fanatics experienced.
The People vs. George Lucas talks about that disappointment and then does so much more. It explores the pain and the heartache of those fans with funny fan-made videos and interviews from critics and crazed fanatics. This film does a great job of presenting a “democratic feature documentary” that I really enjoyed. While The People vs. George Lucas does not provide new information on the films or filmmakers, I believe it did a great job of telling the fans’ story. The film doesn’t just bash George Lucas over and over again in the head but takes time to listen to Star Wars’ fans’ complaints.
This film is for everyone because even if you’re not a hardcore fan of Star Wars you must be aware of the cultural influence that these films had on the world. The fan-made videos are funny and the interview rants are entertaining. Until I watched this film, I don’t think I understood how serious fans are about Star Wars.
Here’s what some people are saying about The People vs. George Lucas:
“The People vs. George Lucas is a great peek into the future battle between the auteur and participatory culture” (lastheplace).
“…this film (along with anything else Star Wars related) isn’t for the creators. It is for you” (denofgeek).
The People v. George Lucas is an amazing piece of documentary film making” (filmschoolrejects).
